Cloudflare adds SSL to all plans, including free level

There’s never been a better time to look at Cloudflare’s website protection plans, especially if you’re on one of their free plans. They’ve enabled SSL protection across the board, which should not only help your website to appear higher in Google’s rankings, but also give your site and customers more security when browsing your website.

What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare is a cloud-based website protection service. They act as the front line of defence for your website, scanning all traffic on the way in and on the way out. Cloud security is a common method of protecting sites against technical attacks and can often be quick and trivial to set up.

What is SSL?

SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a method of transporting sensitive information across the Internet in a way so that only the intended recipient can understand it. In this sense, it protects your website visitors from having their personal information compromised or altered, prevents malicious networks (such as public wi-fi networks) from eavesdropping on any usernames and passwords and other publicly-identifiable information from being collected, and is just generally A Good Thing™.

Google also prioritises ranking of HTTPS-enabled sites in their search index (only slightly, mind) so enabling this will give you a little advantage over your competitors.

Is it good?

Considering the price – yes, very! Kamazoy uses Cloudflare’s threat protection and has been doing so for a few months now. Here’s what our dashboard looks like (with some of the numbers removed)…
